Revenge of a python
Hinduism is a religion of superstitions and most of the Hindus are superstitious. But my father was a man who did not believe in any superstitions. That was the reason why he planned to buy a new house just near the temple of god Nagraj (the god of snakes). Near the temple was a small forest full of snakes. According to the legends, if we happen to harm any snake of this forest, then the soul of the snake will always disturb us. So it was dangerous to live there. Our neighbours and relatives warned my father not to buy that house, but all their words fell on deaf ears.
After two or three months we shifted our house. Before going there I thought that the house would be in the middle of a forest, which was full of tigers and lions and with no houses nearby, because at that time I was only eight years old. But when we went there the place was not like what I had thought it to be. There were many houses near my house and within two or three weeks I had many friends. The negative point of the place was that there was a small forest nearby, in which I was forbidden to go. It was not at all a trouble for me. I was enjoying the place very much, but I was not aware of the danger that was waiting for me.
One of my neighbours was a bully. His name was Anoop. I had told him that I could do anything that he asked. I said this just for fun, but he took it seriously and dared me to go into the forest. He promised to give me 50 chocolates if I did that. I was a bit afraid, but when I thought about getting fifty chocolates I agreed to go into the forest.
Next day, I told my mother that I was going to my friend’s house and that I would come back only at noon. I went straight to Anoop’s house. Anoop was waiting for me. We both headed for the forest. When we reached the forest’s edge Anoop stopped and told me that he would wait for me there and asked me to go into the forest. I carried a small torch with me because I knew that it was dark inside the jungle. I was quite frightened by the sounds of birds and animals and there was no light except the light of my blinking torch. The charge of the battery was about to finish. I hoped that I had brought batteries and checked my pocket but there was nothing inside my pockets except some paper scraps.
Suddenly I felt something cold and creepy moving around my legs. I flashed my torch at it and found out that it was the baby of an Indian python. I had a good knowledge of snakes because I have read a book called ‘SNAKES-ENEMIES OR FRIENDS?’ As it was the baby of a python, it was not so large. I was shocked to see the python and stood there still, trembling. When I got my consciousness back it had started tying itself around my legs. Then I found a stone lying near my legs. I took the stone and hit it hard on the snake’s forehead with all my strength. The snake started rolling out of my legs. I hit it again and again. Blood started coming out of its head and within a few seconds the snake died. At that time I remembered my mother’s words not to harm any snake in the forest, but I did not take it seriously that time because once my father had killed a viper and nothing happened to him. I started running out of the forest. I was not sure of the way; therefore I just guessed the way and walked. Suddenly the light of my torch went off. There was no light other than that. I started running here and there and finally (I don’t know how) I reached the place where Anoop was standing.
He asked me how the journey was. I told him that I had a wonderful experience. He asked me many more questions while walking home. I answered them carefully, leaving out the details of the python adventure because I knew that if I told him about that he would tell it to my parents. When I reached my house I said good bye to him and got into the bed. I had a nice sleep after that.
When I woke up, my legs were paining. My mother called me for the lunch. I told her, ‘My legs are paining, I can’t stand up’. She came and tested my legs. They looked bulged. She called a doctor. The doctor, after looking at my legs, asked me whether I had tied a rope or something like that around my legs. I lied that I did not. But the doctor did not look fully convinced. He asked my mother to take me to hospital to take an X-ray. The X-ray showed that there was a small fracture in my left leg. So I was asked to take bed rest for two weeks. I cursed the python, the doctor and the man who invented X-ray. The next week, I had wonderful dreams about the python.
The next day, Anoop brought me fifty chocolates. I was surprised to see a bully like him keeping his promise. I was very hungry and put one into my mouth. When I put it into my mouth, I felt that it was very cold. Therefore I took it out of my mouth and instead of a chocolate, there was a small snake. I was shocked and cried, “snake, snake” and closed my eyes. I opened my eyes when I heard the familiar sound of my father asking me where the snake was. He had a broom in his hand. I pointed to the place where I had put the snake down, but now instead of a snake I saw a chocolate being eaten by ants. My father smiled and told me, “You are one day early, tomorrow is April 1st.” But I was hundred per cent sure that I had seen a snake. I was afraid that I had gone mad. If I had lost my memory then there would be no use going to school. I tried to remember the questions of my History first chapter in order to check my memory. I could not even remember one question. My next attempt, however, was successful. I was quite sure that my name was Vivek. I was happy that I had at least some memory.
Then many incidents happened in which I was frightened by snakes. Among them I will describe one incident, which I remember even now. I had a friend named Ajith. He was very talkative. Once my friends and I were listening to his usual speech. When I saw his tongue moving to and fro I felt it was like a snake inside his mouth. I suddenly stood up and started pulling his tongue. Seeing this, the other boys were astonished and started pulling me away from Ajith. But no one could move me even a centimetre. That time one boy hit hard on my face. I saw bees flying around my head. I loosened my grip and fell down. After that incident, no one dared to play with me, not even the bully Anoop. They ran away when I went near them. The incident made a serious change on Ajith. He used his tongue only when it was needed. But my parents took the incident seriously and they took me to a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist hypnotized me and I told him all the details. The psychiatrist told my parents that the snakes I saw were illusions and that I was seeing snakes because of my fear. I believed him for the time being. I hope he was correct. However, by this time my father had bought a new house in the city and that is where I am living now. The python did not trouble me after that.
LITTLE THINGS ARE LITTLE THINGS, BUT CAREFULNESS IN LITTLE THINGS IS A GREAT
THING

My Experiences with the Monkey Man
Man is of course the most intelligent animal. He has made many inventions and discoveries, which were hard to believe in olden days. He is able to do all these using his enormous brainpower and extraordinary intelligence. Even today, man is making many inventions and discoveries. But today, man is showing less importance to these inventions, as inventions are not a new experience to us. But if his inventions exceed the limit of imagination, then they could be called as supernatural. It is quit hard to believe them.
The most exciting news in the Indian newspapers during the month of February was the news about a monkey-man. One village near New Delhi, (capital of India) was attacked continuously by a monkey like man who could fly. When it was about midnight, the monkey man would come to the village, attack houses and sometimes harm people. The policemen were not able to catch the monkey-man even though they tried hard. The real fact was that they were afraid of the monkey-man. One week passed and the monkey-man still attacked the villagers. The police could not get any clue about the monkey-man. They just did the job of patrolling and attending interviews.
It was at that time that I decided to go to New Delhi and stay there with my uncle. It was not because of the fact that it was my vacation that I decided to go. I had some other ideas in my mind.
It took me three days to reach there. I was welcomed by my uncle at the railway station. My uncle was a District Police Commissioner and was in charge of the monkey-man’s case. So he had to go to that village the next day. I told him that I also wanted to go with him. But he advised me to stay at home. But I did not give up. Finally, he agreed to take me with him. So we reached that village. It was a pleasant village in all respects except that the people there looked frightened. My uncle and I searched the forest several times but we could not get any clue. When it started to become dark we both went back to the house that we had rented to sleep. He advised me not to go out until morning.
It was a very cold night and I soon fell asleep. I was not really sleeping, I was just pretending. My blood and mind were thirsty of adventure. I opened my eyes as soon as I heard the snoring sound of my uncle
